To facilitate comparison of long-term performance between different LEDs, the LED industry, the Lighting Engineering Society of North America (IESNA), has developed a standard, IES LM-80-08, for measuring the lumen maintenance of LED light sources. Applies to a stand-alone LED package, array or module, not a complete system, testing a component level. The standard does not provide guidance for extrapolation of test results.
Prepared according to a standard format, the test report will provide at least 6.000 hours of luminous flux for a given current and collect data at least every 1000 hours. The test must be performed under well-controlled operating conditions (for example, a constant DC drive current in a thermal chamber where the LED temperature and surrounding air temperature are controlled within certain limits). Luminous flux will be measured for 3 different LED case temperatures: 55ºC, 85ºC and a third temperature to be chosen by the manufacturer. Besides lumen maintenance, chromaticity changes over the measured time.
