EN 61010-1 Safety Rules for Electrical Equipment Used in Measurement, Control and Laboratory

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 61010-1 standard. This standard specifies general safety rules for electrical equipment types and accessories, such as electrical test and measurement equipment, electrical industrial process control equipment, electrical laboratory equipment.

EN 61010-1 Safety Rules for Electrical Equipment Used in Measurement, Control and Laboratory

This standard does not apply to equipment covered by the following standards:

  • IEC 60065 (Audio, video and similar electronic equipment)
  • IEC 60204 (Safety of machinery - Electrical equipment in machinery)
  • IEC 60335 (Household and similar electrical appliances)
  • IEC 60439 (Low voltage switchgear and control devices)
  • IEC 60601 (Medical electrical equipment)
  • IEC 60950 (Information technology devices)
  • IEC 61558 (Power transformers, power supply units and similar equipment)

The purpose of the rules specified in the EN 61010 standard is to reduce the hazards to the operator and his environment to a tolerable level.

Safety Test (LVD Test)

Electrical safety tests (LVD testing) are tests to verify the compliance of any commercial electrical product with relevant standards. Various governments and organizations have developed requirements for electrical products sold worldwide. In most markets, a product must meet safety standards (LVD Test).

To verify compliance with these standards (LVD Test), the following product must pass the safety tests;

  • High Voltage Test
  • Insulation resistance test
  • Ground Continuity Test
  • Leakage Current Test

Dielectric Strength Test

It is applied between the power circuit of the test sample and the protective earth circuit. The test voltage must have a rated frequency of 50 Hz or 60 Hz. The largest test voltage should be applied to the insulations to check the effectiveness of the insulations.

Insulation resistance test

The insulation resistance measured after 500 V direct current (DC) applied between the power circuit conductors and the ground circuit of the test sample must be greater than 100 MΩ.

Soil Continuity Test

At ground continuity, the reliability of the grounding system of the test sample is checked. The resistance of each protective earth circuit between the protective earth terminal and the areas where the sample is expected to be earthed should be measured with a suitable test equipment. The test result is evaluated as positive or negative according to the values specified in the standard.

Leakage Current Test

Leakage current testing is the measurement of the current flowing between the accessible surfaces of the test specimen and the ground with a suitable test device under normal, abnormal and fault conditions. As a result of the test, controls are made within the limits given by the standard.
