EN 50395 Electrical Test Methods for Low Voltage Power Cables

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 50395 standard. EN 50395 contains the electrical test methods required for testing harmonized low-voltage power cables specifically rated up to and including 450-750 V.

A description is given of the origin of these test methods and the background to this European standard. The specific cable standard specifies the tests that must be performed on the relevant cable type. It also specifies whether the specific test for a particular cable type is a type test (T), a sample test (S), or a routine test (R).

T, S and R are defined in the relevant cable standard. The requirements that must be met during or after testing are specified in the relevant cable standard for the particular cable type. However, some test requirements are clear and universal, such that no failure will occur during voltage tests and they are specified in the specific test method.

Test methods specifically for use on mains power cables are not covered by this European standard. They can be found on the HD 605. Test methods specifically for use in communication cables are the responsibility of the CENELEC TC 46X, communication cables technical committee. Currently such test methods are provided in the EN 50289 series.
