IEC EN 60352-6 Solderless Connections - Part 6: Insulation Piercing Connections - General Requirements and Test Methods

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60352-6 testing. This part of IEC EN 60352 is applicable to insulation-piercing connections with stranded wires, flat conductors and flat flexible circuits for use in telecommunications equipment and electronic devices using similar techniques.

IEC EN 60352-6 Solderless Connections - Part 6: Insulation Piercing Connections - General Requirements and Test Methods

In addition to test procedures, information on materials and data from industrial experience are included to ensure electrically stable connections under anticipated environmental conditions.

The purpose of this standard is:

  • Determining the suitability of insulation piercing connections under specified mechanical, electrical and atmospheric conditions;
  • It provides a means of comparing test results when the tools used to make the connections have different designs or manufactures.

There are different designs and materials for insulation piercing terminations in use. Therefore, only the basic parameters of the termination, the performance requirements of the conductor and the full connection are specified in this standard.

Links should be handled carefully and skillfully in accordance with current good practice. Instruments should be used and inspected according to the instructions provided by the instrument or connector manufacturers. Tools must be able to make equally reliable insulation-piercing connections throughout their lifetime. Tools must be designed to operate in such a way that insulation-piercing termination or unacceptable damage to conductors is avoided.

Hand tools will be provided with full rotation mechanism. Automatic tools shall be provided with a full loop mechanism or equivalent protection. Tools are evaluated by testing insulation piercing connections made with the tools to be evaluated.

The insulation material will have properties compatible with insulation piercing, ie the insulation material will be capable of being easily pierced by the piercing zones. In the case of twisted conductors or tinsel wires, the insulation must additionally be able to hold the strips in place to prevent them from moving unnecessarily as the connection is made.

For flat cables, the insulation between the conductors, including any additional insulation that makes up the cable, must be able to be easily pierced by additional penetrating zones.
