EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60794-1-219 testing. This part of IEC EN 60794 applies to hybrid telecommunications cables having a combination of both optical fibers and electrical conductors, as well as fiber optic cables for use with telecommunications equipment and devices using similar techniques.

IEC EN 60794-1-219 Fiber Optic Cables - Part 1-219: General Specification - Basic Optical Cable Testing Procedures - Material Compatibility Testing - Method F19

The purpose of this standard is to define test procedures to be used in establishing uniform requirements for material compatibility performance of cables, cable components and cable subassemblies. The compatibility of materials within a cable has the potential to include a number of material pairs. However, experience has shown that the most appropriate considerations relate to the interactions of the cable filler and overflow materials with other materials in the cable.

The purpose of this test is to determine the compatibility of components with polymeric tube/core core filler or water blocking materials that are in direct contact with components identified within the cable structure. This test is valid for all cables blocked by water. Typical water blocking materials include, but are not limited to, filler compounds, absorbent powders, and overflow compounds.

The sample of the individual components should consist of a container of sufficient size to contain the component samples, the samples to be tested, and sufficient fill or overflow compound (as appropriate) to completely cover the samples in the container. Preparation of the samples includes the steps of placing the samples in the container and pouring the filler or overflow compound onto these samples. Whether filling or filling compound is used depends on what material is adjacent to the component to be tested in the actual cable. A filling or filling composition may further comprise an activated dry water blocking material. Exact test details are currently being evaluated for compatibility between dry water blocking material containing absorbent powders and other cable components.
