IEC EN 61215-1 Test for Terrestrial Photovoltaic (PV) Modules

The useful service life of modules so qualified will depend on their design, their environment and the conditions in which they are operated. Test results are not to be interpreted as a quantitative estimate of module life. This standard is intended to apply to all terrestrial flat sheet module materials, such as crystalline silicon module types and thin film modules. It does not apply to systems without long-term applications, such as flexible modules installed on awnings or awnings.

The purpose of this series of tests is to determine the electrical properties of the module and to demonstrate, as far as possible, within reasonable cost and time constraints, that the module can withstand prolonged exposure in the open air. Accelerated test conditions are empirically based on those required to reproduce the selected observed field faults and apply equally across module types. Acceleration factors may vary with product design and therefore not all degradation mechanisms may occur.

Modules will be supplied with documentation describing the electrical and mechanical installation methods as well as the electrical ratings of the module. The documentation will specify the shock protection class for which the module is authorized and any special restrictions required for that class. The standards should ensure that installers and operators obtain appropriate and sufficient documentation for the safe installation, use and maintenance of PV modules.
