IEC EN 61400-4 applies to enclosed speed-increasing gearboxes for horizontal axis wind turbine drivelines with a power exceeding 500 kW. This standard applies to wind turbines installed on land or at sea. This standard provides guidance on the analysis of wind turbine loads for the design of gear and gearbox elements.
Gear elements covered by this standard include spur, helical or double helical gears and their combinations in parallel and epicyclic order in the main power path. The standard is based on gearbox designs using roller bearings.
Also included is guidance on engineering shafts, hub interfaces, bearings and gearbox structure in developing a fully integrated design that meets the challenges of operating conditions. Lubrication of the transmission is handled together with prototype and production testing. Finally, guidance on operation and maintenance of the gearbox is provided.
IEC EN 61400-4 outlines the minimum requirements for the specification, design and verification of gearboxes in wind turbines. It is not intended to be used as a complete design feature or instruction manual, and is not intended to guarantee the performance of mounted drive systems. It is intended for use by experienced gear designers who can select reasonable values for factors based on knowledge of similar designs and the effects of lubrication, deflection, manufacturing tolerances, metallurgy, residual stress and system dynamics. It is not intended for use by the engineering community in general.
