EN 62133-2 Standard Test Method for Lithium Batteries

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 62133-2 testing. This test method specifies requirements and tests for portable sealed secondary lithium cells and batteries containing a non-acid electrolyte for use and reasonably foreseeable abuse.

EN 62133-2 Standard Test Method for Lithium Batteries

EN 62133-2 is the most important standard for the export of lithium polymer batteries, including those used in IT Equipment, instruments, laboratory, household and medical equipment.

This first edition cancels and replaces the second edition of IEC 2012 published in 62133. Creates a technical revision. This release includes the following important technical changes related to IEC 62133:2012:

  • Separation of nickel systems into a separate Chapter 1,
  • Inclusion of coin cell requirements,
  • Updating the assembly of cells into batteries,
  • Mechanical tests (vibration, shock).

It is tested according to EN 62133-2 for portable sealed seconds cells with alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes and for secondary cells and batteries with safety requirements for use in portable applications for lithium-ion batteries made from them.

Lithium-ion cells and intended lithium-ion batteries are safe and continue to work in all respects. Cells and batteries exposed to reasonably foreseeable misuse do not present significant hazards.

Tests are carried out with lithium-ion batteries not older than six months with the number of lithium-ion cells or lithium-ion batteries as specified in EN 62133-2. Unless otherwise specified in the test methods, preparation is carried out in an environment of 20 °C ± 5°C.

If the specified upper or lower charge temperature of a lithium ion cell exceeds the values for the upper or lower limit test temperatures, the lithium ion cells should be charged at the specified values, plus 5°C for the upper limit and minus 5°C for the lower limit. A valid rationale must be provided to ensure the safety of the lithium-ion cell.
