IEC 61215 Terrestrial Photovoltaic (PV) Modules - Standard Test for Design Qualification and Type Approval

IEC 61215 sets out requirements for the design qualification of terrestrial photovoltaic modules suitable for long-term operation in outdoor climates. The useful service life of such high-quality modules will depend on their design, environment and conditions in which they are operated.

Test results are not to be interpreted as a quantitative estimate of module life. This standard is intended to apply to all terrestrial flat plate module materials, such as crystalline silicon module types and thin film modules. It does not apply to systems without long-term applications, such as flexible modules installed on awnings or tents.

The purpose of this series of tests is to determine the electrical and thermal properties of the module and to demonstrate, as far as possible, that the module can withstand prolonged exposure to the climate, with reasonable cost and time constraints. The actual life expectancy of qualifying modules will depend on their design, environment and conditions in which they are operated.
