IEC EN 60745-2-5 addresses the safety of hand-held motorized or magnetically actuated power tools, special requirements for all types of circular saws. The rated voltage is not more than 250 V for single-phase ac or dc and 440 V for three-phase ac appliances. This standard does not apply to saws used with abrasive wheels.
Testing and measurement are performed at maximum depth of cut and 90°. The saw is held by the arms with the base plate in a horizontal position and the upper guard on top. During each cut, the underguard or guard system must switch from fully closed to maximum open operating position for each cutting cycle without manual assistance. Also, for plunge saws with spring-loaded riving knife, the riving knife must move from fully open to fully retracted.
Saws should be protected to minimize the risk of accidental access to the rotating blade during normal conditions of use. Protection systems cannot be removed without the aid of a tool. Other means of achieving the required degree of mechanical safety are allowed, provided they are as effective and reliable as those specified.
The vertical projection of the upper guard to the blade must cover at least the smallest specified blade cutting edge area. The gap between the upper guard and the blade must be designed to prevent the specified blade from coming into contact with the tooth tips of the saw blade.
