IEC EN 60947-5-2 Low Voltage Switchgear and Control Equipment - Part 5-2: Control Circuit Devices and Switching Elements - Proximity Switches

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60947-5-2 testing. IEC EN 60947-5-2 applies to inductive and capacitive proximity switches that detect the presence of metallic and/or non-metallic objects, ultrasonic proximity switches that detect the presence of sound reflecting objects, and photoelectric proximity switches that detect the presence of objects.

IEC EN 60947-5-2 Low Voltage Switchgear and Control Equipment - Part 5-2: Control Circuit Devices and Switching Elements - Proximity Switches

These proximity switches are self-contained, have semiconductor switching elements and are designed to be connected to circuits with a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V 50 Hz/60 Hz ac. or 300 V dc This Standard is not intended to cover proximity switches with analog outputs.

The purpose of this standard is to specify for proximity switches:

  • Definitions;
  • Classification;
  • Features;
  • Product information;
  • Normal service, assembly and transport conditions;
  • Structural and performance requirements;
  • Tests to validate rated features.

Cylindrical proximity switches with a stem diameter of 12 mm or less may provide this marking on the lanyard or on a label permanently attached to the lanyard located no more than 100 mm from the body of the device. The marking shall be indelible and easily legible and shall not be placed on parts that can normally be removed during use.

The materials must be suitable for the particular application and ensure that the equipment complies with the relevant testing requirements. Particular attention will be paid to flame and moisture resistant qualities and the requirement to protect certain insulation materials against moisture.

Current-carrying parts shall have the necessary mechanical strength and current-carrying capacity for their intended use. For electrical connections, no contact pressure should be transmitted through the insulating material other than ceramic or another material with less unsuitable properties, unless there is sufficient flexibility in the metallic parts to compensate for any potential shrinkage or leakage of the insulating material.
