IEC EN 61558-2-5 deals with the safety of shaver transformers, power supply units containing shaver transformers, and shaver supply units. Shaver transformers containing electronic circuits are also covered by this standard.
Unless otherwise specified, the term transformer hereinafter includes shaver transformers and power supply units including shaver transformers and shaver supply units.
This section is applicable to fixed, single-phase air-cooled (natural or forced), stand-alone or related dry-type transformers. Coils may be encapsulated or unencapsulated. This standard applies to transformers and power supplies (linear) with internal operating frequencies not exceeding 500 Hz.
Used in conjunction with Sections 2-16 for switched mode power supply units (SMPS), this standard also applies to power supplies with internal operating frequencies higher than 500 Hz. Where two requirements conflict, the most serious takes precedence. Transformers covered in this section are used in applications where double or reinforced insulation between circuits is required due to installation rules for bathrooms and similar places or device specifications.
For shaver supply units, the marking for the rated output voltages and the symbol 8.11 must be shown on the front of the enclosure so that it can be seen when the unit is installed as in normal use. For shaver supply units intended to provide different output voltages, the output voltage setting selected should be clearly recognizable.
