ISO 18246 specifies safety requirements for the conductive connection of electrically powered mopeds and motorcycles to an external electrical power source.
It does not apply to vehicles not in normal conditions, such as damaged vehicles and vehicles with mechanical or electrical faults. Applies only to on-board charging systems between plug or vehicle couplers and RESS circuits.
The requirements given in this International Standard must be met within the range of environmental and operating conditions in which electric vehicles are designed to be charged, as specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
The built-in charging system should operate safely and properly under normal use. The built-in charging system will include safety tools such as protection against electric shock to the driver or the environment even in the event of a single fault. Fail-safe design will be considered for the built-in charging system.
The on-board charger should be designed to shut off power to the RESS or traction battery for safety if it could fail dangerously. Information necessary for the installation, operation and maintenance of the charger and any components should be provided in appropriate formats such as drawings, diagrams, charts, tables and instructions.
Any connections integrated into the onboard charging system must not cause overheating of pins or wires or excessive voltage on the couplers/plugs.
Wire paths will be smooth and free from sharp edges. Separate parts that can move relative to each other during charging must not cause excessive voltage in electrical connections and internal conductors, including equipotential bonding devices.
Even if the moving part of the on-board equipment is moved back and forth and the conductor is flexed to the largest angle allowed by its construction, no damage to the wiring will occur. If open coil springs or cord protectors are used, they must be properly installed and insulated. Flexible metal pipes will not damage the insulation of the conductors inside them.
