IEC EN 61019-2 Surface Acoustic Wave Resonators - Standard Test for User's Manual

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 61019-2 testing. SAW resonators are now widely used in various applications: VCR RF converters, CATV local oscillators, measurement equipment, remote control, etc. While SAW resonators also apply to narrow bandwidth filters, the scope of this part of IEC EN 61019 is limited to SAW resonators for oscillator applications.

IEC EN 61019-2 Surface Acoustic Wave Resonators - Standard Test for User's Manual

It is not the purpose of this standard to explain theory or try to cover all possibilities that may arise in practical conditions. This standard highlights some basic questions that the user should consider before ordering a SAW resonator for a new application. Such a procedure will insure the user against unsatisfactory performance.

Standard specifications such as those of the IEC, of which this standard forms a part, and national specifications or detailed specifications published by manufacturers, include the current resonant frequency, quality factor, motion resistance, parallel capacitance, etc. will define combinations. It has been compiled to include a wide variety of SAW resonators with standardized performances. It cannot be overemphasized that the user should select SAW resonators from these specifications whenever possible, even if minor changes may be made to the circuitry to enable the use of standard resonators. This applies in particular to the selection of the rated frequency.

It is a user's primary concern that the resonator properties meet certain specifications. The selection of oscillating circuits and SAW resonators to meet such specifications should be a matter of agreement between the user and the manufacturer.

Grid reflectors feed perturbation into the SAW due to discontinuity in electrical or mechanical impedance. When SAW comes to such grating reflectors, the incident wave is gradually converted into a reflected wave. Although the amount of perturbation per unit reflective element can be very small, a large number of periodically arranged such elements reflect the SAW in phase and maximize coherent reflection.

The oscillation frequency is different from the full resonant frequency and center frequency of single port or dual port SAW resonators. The frequency difference depends on the state of the oscillator circuit; load capacitance or feedback amplifier phase shift. Resonators should be ordered considering the frequency dependence in the designed oscillator circuit.
