EN 50182 Conductors for Overhead Lines - Round Wire Concentric Multi-Strand Conductors

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of EN 50182 testing. This European Standard specifies the electrical and mechanical properties of concentric bare overhead electrical conductors with round wire twisted in alternative directions, with or without grease, according to EN 50326, made of one or any combination of the following:

EN 50182 Conductors for Overhead Lines - Round Wire Concentric Multi-Strand Conductors

  • Hard drawn Aluminum is designated AL60889 according to EN 1;
  • Aluminum alloy designated AL50183 to AL2 according to EN 7;
  • Zinc-coated steel wire of quality and class specified as ST50189A, ST1B, ST2D, ST3A, ST4E and ST5C according to EN 6;
  • Aluminium-clad steel wire with class markings 61232SA (classes A and B), 20SA, 27SA and 30SA in accordance with EN 40.

The direction of rotation is specified as left or right. In the right twist direction, the wires are twisted in the direction of the middle part of the letter Z when the conductor is placed vertically. With the left twist direction, when the conductor is placed vertically, the wires are twisted in the direction of the middle part of the letter S.

Conductors for existing or established overhead line designs, as well as dimensions and bending methods not covered by this standard, may be designed and supplied by agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser must take into account the requirements of this standard.

Conductors containing only one steel wire must have no joints after heat treatment of the wire or rod. No connections shall be made on the finished wire or strands of galvanized or aluminium-coated steel conductor core during twisting.

Splicing is permitted for aluminum wires that break during twisting due to unavoidable reasons, where such breakage is not related to a natural defect in the wire or to the use of short lengths of aluminum wire. The joints must be consistent with the geometry of the original wire; The connections must be machined so that they are smooth and equal to the diameter of the original wire and have no kinks.
