This standard details test methods for determining the capacitance characteristics of finished cables used in analog and digital communication systems.
Measurement of mutual capacitance and capacitance imbalance to earth shall be made with ac in the frequency range between 500 Hz and 2 kHz.
Three (3) terminal capacitance bridges for stable conditions and two (2) terminal capacitance bridges for unstable conditions will be used to measure mutual capacitance.
Accuracy will be better than 1%.
The cable under test (CUT) shall have a minimum length of 100 m and both ends of the CUT shall be prepared to prevent leakage capacitance.
The test should be performed on the CUT after the continuity or conductor resistance test.
The measuring equipment must be calibrated to the manufacturer's specification. Test leads must be included in the calibration procedure.
For coaxial cables, Cmu is measured between the inner and outer conductor with the outer conductor connected to earth.
The measuring voltage must be applied to or near a quad pair with all other conductors and shields connected to earth, if any.
The test result of the mutual capacitance should be normalized to the reference length of 1 km.
