EN 60840 Extruded Insulated Power Cables and Accessories for Nominal Voltages 30 kV to 150 kV - Test Methods

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 60840 standard. EN 60840 specifies test methods and requirements for power cable systems, stand-alone cables and stand-alone accessories for fixed installations and rated voltages above 30 kV (Um = 36 kV) and up to 150 kV (Um = 170 kV).

EN 60840 Extruded Insulated Power Cables and Accessories for Nominal Voltages 30 kV to 150 kV - Test Methods

The requirements apply to single-core cables and individually shielded three-core cables and their accessories for normal installation and operating conditions, but in standard tests such as submarine cables and accessories, or adjustment of special test conditions may be necessary. This document does not cover transition connections between cables with rolled insulation and cables with paper insulation.

The cable length, or a sample thereof, should be placed in the test chamber, which will be kept at a reasonably constant temperature for at least 12 hours prior to testing. If there is any doubt that the conductor or metal screen temperature is not the same as room temperature, the resistance should be measured after the cable has been in the test chamber for 24 hours. Alternatively, the resistance can be measured on a conductor or metal screen sample that has been conditioned for at least 1 hour in a temperature-controlled liquid bath.

The measurement should be made on a test jacket approximately 50 mm long removed from the completed cable. The piece should be split lengthwise and carefully flattened. After the test piece has been cleaned, a sufficient number of measurements should be made along the circumference of the sheath and at a distance of at least 10 mm from the edge of the flattened piece to ensure that the minimum thickness is measured.

Measurements should be made on a ring of the sheath that is carefully cut from the sample. The thickness will be determined at a sufficient number of points around the circumference of the ring to allow the minimum thickness to be measured.
