IEC EN 60068-2-38 Environmental Tests, Part 2-38: Compound Temperature-Humidity Cyclic Test

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of IEC EN 60068-2-38 standard. IEC EN 60068-2-38 specifies a composite testing procedure primarily for component type specimens to determine in an accelerated manner the resistance of specimens to the detrimental effects of high temperature/humidity and cold conditions.

This test standard does not apply to samples that are energized during the full test. Samples can be energized during fixed phases of testing. Measurements on energized samples are typically performed during stationary phases of testing, unless otherwise specified.

It is stressed, however, that the freezing effect will only occur when the crack dimensions are large enough to allow a harmonious body of water to penetrate, as is normally the case in cracks between gaskets and metal assemblies or between gaskets and cable ends.

The degree of condensation will depend mainly on the thermal time constant of the surface of the test specimens and may be negligible for very small specimens but very large for large specimens.

When the air temperature is lowered, the air in the sample's interior cavities contracts, causing a pressure drop and the extraction of wet air or condensed water through cracks or other leaks inside the sample. Wet air condenses on the inner walls of a cavity and can gradually fill it.

During the temperature rise phase, the air in the cavity expands, partially escaping, this time with a lower dew point than during withdrawal. This cycle is repeated and water can accumulate inside the sample and gradually fill its voids.

During the transition to the sub-zero temperature stage of the test, the water trapped in the cracks and other voids freezes, and due to the expansion of the ice volume, the cracks lengthen and new cracks may form.
