IEC EN 60079-1 contains specific requirements for the construction and testing of electrical equipment with flameproof enclosure type "d" intended for use in explosive gas atmospheres. This standard supplements and replaces the general requirements of IEC EN 60079-0.
While the inner and outer chambers of the tester are filled with a known gas or a mixture of steam and air at normal temperature3 and pressure (20°C, 105 N/m2), the gap of the annular seal between the two chambers is precisely adjusted to the desired value. The inner mixture is ignited and the flame spread, if any, is monitored through the sight glasses of the outer chamber.
Normally, the main parts of the tester and especially the walls and flanges of the inner chamber gasket and the "h" electrodes of the ignition system are made of stainless steel. However, some gases or vapors may require the use of other materials to avoid corrosion or other chemical effects. It is recommended not to use light alloys to make the electrodes.
The gas or vapor is determined by adjusting the gap in small steps to find the maximum gap value that prevents ignition of the external mixture for any gas or vapor concentration in the air.
