IEC EN 61156-5 describes cables intended primarily for horizontal ground wiring, as defined in ISO/IEC 11801. It covers cable designs consisting of separately shielded, common shielded and unshielded pairs or quads. The transmission characteristics and frequency range of the cables are specified at 20°C. The cables covered by this standard are intended to operate with voltages and currents normally encountered in communication systems.
Material selection and cable construction will be appropriate for the intended application and installation of the cable. Special care must be taken to meet all requirements regarding EMC and fire performance (such as combustion characteristics, smoke generation, halogen gas generation).
The conductor shall be IEC EN 61156-1, solid annealed copper conductor and have a nominal diameter between 0,4 mm and 0,65 mm. The cable element will be twisted pair or quadruple.
A splitter can be used to separate the cable elements. Cable elements, including spacers, must be assembled to form the cable core. The core of the cable can be wrapped with a protective layer of a non-hygroscopic and non-wicking material.
The sheath should be continuous and have a uniform thickness as much as possible. A non-metallic ripcord can be provided. When provided, the slit cord will be hygroscopic and without roving.
