IEC EN 61400-3-2 Wind Power Generation Systems - Part 3-2: Testing of Design Requirements for Floating Offshore Wind Turbines

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 61400-3-2 testing. IEC EN 61400-3-2 specifies additional requirements for the assessment of external conditions at a floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) site and specifies key design requirements to ensure the engineering integrity of FOWTs. Its purpose is to provide an appropriate level of protection against damage from all hazards throughout its planned lifetime.

IEC EN 61400-3-2 Wind Power Generation Systems - Part 3-2: Testing of Design Requirements for Floating Offshore Wind Turbines

This standard focuses on the engineering integrity of the structural components of a FOWT but also deals with subsystems such as control and protection mechanisms, internal electrical systems and mechanical systems. A wind turbine is considered a FOWT if the floating infrastructure is subject to hydrodynamic loading and is supported by buoyancy and an anchoring system.

The following types of floating infrastructure are explicitly covered in this standard:

  • Ship-shaped structures and barges;
  • Half divers (Half);
  • Mast buoys (Spar);
  • Tensioned platforms/floats (TLP/TLB).

In addition to the structural types listed above, this standard covers other floating platforms generally intended to support wind turbines. These other structures can have a large range of variability in geometry and structural forms and are therefore only partially covered by the requirements of this standard. In other cases, it may be found that the special requirements set out in this standard do not apply to all or part of a structure at the design stage. In all the above cases, compliance with this standard will require that the design be based on its fundamental principles and achieve a level of safety equivalent to or greater than the level specified in it.

This standard applies to unmanned floating structures with a single horizontal axis turbine. Additional considerations may be required for multi-turbine units on a single floating infrastructure, vertical axis wind turbines, or combined wind/wave power systems.
