Tools covered by this standard include, but are not limited to, belt sanders, drum sanders or polishers, reciprocating sanders or polishers, orbital sanders or polishers, and random orbital sanders or polishers. The rated voltage is not more than 250 V for single-phase ac or dc appliances and 480 V for three-phase ac appliances. The rated input is not more than 3700 W.
This standard deals with the hazards posed by tools that are reasonably foreseeable and encountered by all persons in normal use.
Hand-held power tools are within the scope of this standard that can be mounted on a support or workbench for use as a stationary tool without any modifications to the tool itself, and such a combination of hand tool and a support is considered a portable tool.
The tools are operated with the sandpaper in reverse position or, as appropriate, the roller equipped with a polishing head, resting on a steel plate under the weight of the tool. The sandpaper should be changed as necessary to avoid direct contact between the roller and the steel plate. These tools are tested only in the upright position with the platen horizontal.
