IEC 60664-2 Insulation Coordination for Equipment in Low Voltage Systems - Part 2: Application Guide

The IEC 60664-2 standard serves as an application guide for technical committees and manufacturers that set sizing requirements for products according to the IEC 60664 series. The rated system voltages or rated insulation voltages, the overvoltage category of the products, any type of overvoltage, the frequency of the voltage, the properties of the solid insulation material and the degree of pollution and humidity levels are important conditions to be tested.

IEC 60664-2 provides an overview of the different types of surge surge voltages that can occur in low voltage installations and equipment. Especially:

• The magnitude and duration of typical fluctuations and the frequency of their occurrence
• Information about overvoltages caused by the interaction between power and communication systems
• Guidelines when considering interface issues related to insulation coordination
• Guidelines for surge protection devices based on usability and risk assessments, including interaction within the system
• Emphasizes transient overvoltages and other factors to be considered for insulation coordination, particularly with regard to protective control using surge protective devices

This white paper provides guidelines for a common basis for IEC technical committees when considering interface issues related to insulation coordination. Surge protection devices are key elements in achieving a controlled overvoltage condition in low voltage ac power systems and equipment. The purpose of this guide is to avoid conflicting activities in the various committees involved and to obtain consistent requirements and guidelines. It deals with factors that influence the determination of overvoltage categories for installation and equipment.

The IEC 62066 technical report is initially prepared by a joint working group (JWG) of representatives from the five IEC technical committees and subcommittees, and then completed by national committees and experts appointed by CIGRE-CIRED.
