IEC 60664-3 Coordination of Insulation for Equipment in Low Voltage Systems - Part 3: Use of Coating, Pottery or Molding for Protection against Pollution

The IEC 60664-3 standard applies to assemblies protected against contamination using plating, potting or moulding, thus allowing for reduced gap and leakage distances. This document describes the requirements and test procedures for two protection methods: type 1 protection improves the microenvironment of protected parts, and type 2 protection is considered to be similar to solid insulation.

This standard also applies to all types of shielded printed plates, including the surfaces of multi-layer plates, substrates and inner layers of similarly protected assemblies. In the case of multi-layer printed sheets, distances through an inner layer are covered by the strict insulation requirements in Chapter 1. This standard only refers to permanent protection.

It does not cover assemblies that are subject to mechanical adjustment or repair. The principles of this standard apply to functional, basic, complementary and reinforced insulation. This consolidated version consists of the second edition (2003) and amendment 1 (2010). Therefore, there is no need to issue a change order in addition to this publication.

This section of IEC 60664 details the conditions under which reduction of clearance and leakage distances can be applied to solid assemblies such as printed boards or component terminals. Protection against pollution can be achieved by any type of encapsulation, such as coating, potting or molding. Protection can be applied to one or both sides of the assembly. This standard specifies the insulating properties of the protective material.

Between any two unshielded conductive parts, the clearance and leakage distance requirements of IEC 60664-1 apply. This document refers to permanent preservation only. It does not cover post-repair installations.

Technical committees should consider the effect on the protection of conductors and components that overheat, particularly under fault conditions, and decide whether any additional requirements are necessary.

The safe performance of assemblies depends on a precise and controlled manufacturing process for the application of the protective system. Quality control requirements, eg sampling tests, should be considered by technical committees.
