IEC 60840 Extruded Insulated Power Cables and Accessories for Rated Voltages 30 kV (U m = 36 kV) to 150 kV (U m = 170 kV) - Test Methods and Requirements

IEC 60840 specifies test methods and requirements for power cable systems, stand-alone cables, and stand-alone accessories for fixed installations and rated voltages above 30 kV (U m = 36 kV) and up to 150 kV (including U m).

The requirements apply to single-core cables and individually shielded three-core cables and their accessories for normal installation and operating conditions, but in standard tests such as submarine cables and accessories, or adjustment of special test conditions may be necessary.

This standard does not cover transition connections between cables with rolled insulation and paper insulated cables.

This standard includes the following important technical changes:

• Gas-immersed cable terminations for use at rated voltages above 52 kV must be designed, type and routinely tested in accordance with IEC 62271-209 in addition to the routine and type tests specified in this document.
• Requirements were introduced for composite outdoor termination insulators.
• The specified test cylinder diameters for the bending test (type and prequalification tests) have been changed according to IEC TR 61901.
• A low smoke halogen-free outer sheath material, designated ST12, was introduced.
• Additional tests are performed under fire conditions: vertical flame spread, smoke density, acidity and conductivity to be applied according to the declared fire performance for the cable.
• Added water penetration test in conductor.
• In addition to the tests for the external protection of the joints, type tests for the screen partition insulation of all accessories were implemented.
