IEC 60947-1 Low Voltage Switchgear and Controller - Part 1: General Rules

This part of the IEC 60947 standard applies to low-voltage switchgear and controlgears, hereinafter referred to as equipment or devices, intended to be connected to circuits with a rated voltage not exceeding 1000 V AC or 1500 V DC when required by the relevant product standard.

This document specifies general rules and common safety requirements for low voltage switchgear and control devices, including:

  • Definitions;
  • Features;
  • Information provided with the equipment;
  • Normal service, installation and shipping conditions, decommissioning and dismantling;
  • Structural and performance requirements;
  • Verification of features and performance;
  • Energy efficiency issues;
  • Environmental aspects.

This document does not apply to:

  • Low-voltage switchgear and control assemblies considered in the IEC 61439 series as applicable;
  • Terminals for the connection of aluminum conductors;

Terminals for aluminum conductors are being evaluated for the next revision. Use in explosive environments, software and firmware requirements for functional security implementation, and cybersecurity aspects are considered for revision.
