EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60794-1-22 testing. This part of the IEC EN 60794 standard defines test procedures to be used in establishing uniform requirements for the environmental performance of fiber optic cables and cables with a combination of both optical fibers and electrical conductors for use with telecommunications equipment and devices using similar techniques.

IEC EN 60794-1-22 Fiber Optic Cables - Part 1-22: General Specifications - Basic Optical Cable Environmental Test Methods

The purpose of this standard is to define test procedures to be used in establishing uniform requirements for environmental requirement performance. Throughout this standard, the term optical cable is also used to refer to fiber optic units, microchannel fiber units, etc. may contain. General requirements, definitions and a complete reference guide for all types of test methods are provided in IEC EN 60794-1-2.

This measurement method can be applied to fiber optic cables tested by temperature cycling to determine the stability behavior of attenuation of cables subjected to temperature changes. This method can also be used to evaluate buffer tubes or other elements independent of a cable construction, as defined in a detailed specification.

Changes in the attenuation of fiber optic cables that can occur at varying temperatures are usually the result of twisting or stretching of the fibers, which is caused by differences between the coefficients of thermal expansion and the coefficients of cable strength and sheath elements. For temperature-dependent measurements, test conditions should simulate the worst conditions.

This test can be used to monitor cable behavior in the temperature range that may occur during storage, transportation and use, or to check stability in a selected temperature range.

The sample should be of sufficient length as specified in the factory length or detail specification, but still of the appropriate length to achieve the desired attenuation measurement accuracy. Sample is also defined as cable sample deployed for testing.

In order to obtain reproducible values, the cable sample should be brought into the climatic chamber so that the placement does not affect the measurement. Such methods can be a loose spool or a spool with large diameter spools, padded spools with a soft layer, or a zero tension plant device.
