IEC 61000-4-4 Electromagnetic Compatibility and Electrical Fast Transient Explosion Immunity Test Standard

The scope of the IEC 61000-4-4 standard covers electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) immunity requirements and test methods for electrical and electronic equipment subjected to repeated electrical rapid transient bursts.

IEC 61000-4-4 Electromagnetic Compatibility and Electrical Fast Transient Explosion Immunity Test Standard

The purpose of the IEC 61000-4-4 standard is to establish a common and repeatable basis for the evaluation of the operating characteristics of electrical and electronic equipment when subjected to sudden impulses to electrical fast transients at the power supply, signal, control and ground terminals. Waveform of test voltage, range of test levels, test devices, verification methods of test equipment, test setup, test methods are described. Electrical Fast Transient Immunity Against Sudden Immunity Test is applied to disruptive transient types such as transients caused by switching transitions of electrical and electronic devices. It evaluates its working qualities and performance in case of exposure (inductive loads on and off, opening and closing of relay contacts, etc.). Electrical fast transient pulses are produced by switching inductive loads. These switching transitions are often referred to as fast transients.

IEC 61000-4-4 deals with the immunity of electrical and electronic equipment against repeated electrical rapid transients. It has a basic EMC broadcast status according to IEC Guide 107. Electrical rapid transitions give explosion immunity requirements and test procedures. It also defines ranges of test levels and establishes test procedures. The purpose of this standard is to establish a common and repeatable reference for assessing the immunity of electrical and electronic equipment when subjected to bursts of electrical rapid transition at the supply, signal, control and ground connection points.

The test method documented in this standard defines a consistent method for assessing the immunity of an equipment or system to a defined phenomenon.

The standard defines:

Test voltage waveform;
Range of test levels;
Test equipment;
verification procedures of test equipment;
Test setup;
Test procedure.
The standard gives specifications for laboratory and post-installation testing.
