It provides a common reference for evaluating equipment performance when subjected to high-energy disturbances in power and interconnect lines.

Since surge pulses can have several kilovolts of high energy, they can damage or destroy electrical equipment that does not have surge protection components (varistor etc.). Even a momentary power surge can cause arcs, deterioration of cables, damage to the motor and many other problems.
The task of the described laboratory test is to find out the response of the tested equipment to overvoltages caused by switching and lightning effects under specified operating conditions.
