IEC 61010-1, types of electrical equipment wherever they are intended; Specifies general safety requirements for electrical test and measurement equipment, electrical industrial process controllers, electrical laboratory equipment and accessories.

This edition includes the following major changes from the second edition, as well as many other changes:

• The scope of the standard has been expanded to cover all the places where these products can be used, so both professional and non-professional versions of these products are covered;
• Requirements for test and measurement circuits have been removed and included in a specific IEC 61010-2-030 standard;
• Isolation requirements have been completely rewritten;
• Additional requirements for protection against mechanical hazards are included;
• The surface temperature limits have been changed to comply with the limits of EN 563;
• The radiation requirements were changed and the distinction between intended emission and undesired emission was taken into account;
• Added requirements for reasonably foreseeable misuse and ergonomic aspects;
• A new article on hazards and environments not covered by the standard has been added, along with a new informative on risk assessment;
• A new informative supplement addresses methods of reducing the degree of pollution of a microenvironment;
• Added requirements for the qualification of coatings for protection against pollution;
• A new informative appendix has been added to further explain how to determine the mains circuit operating voltage.
