IEC 62770 describes specifications and test methods for natural esters not used in transformers and similar oil-impregnated electrical equipment where a liquid is required as an insulator and heat transfer medium.
Doped natural esters are within the scope of this standard. Due to their different chemical compositions, natural esters differ from insulating mineral oils and other insulating fluids with high flash points such as synthetic esters or silicone fluids.
Low-viscosity natural, ester-derived sealing fluids have been introduced but not covered by this standard. This standard is only applicable to unused natural esters. Recovered natural esters and natural esters blended with unnatural ester liquids are outside the scope of this standard.

Unused natural esters, which are the subject of this standard, should be used by paying attention to personal hygiene. Direct contact with eyes should be avoided. In case of contact with eyes, irrigation should be done with plenty of clean running water and medical attention should be sought.
Disposal of natural esters, chemicals and sample containers specified in this standard should be carried out in accordance with current national legislation regarding their effects on the environment. Every precaution should be taken to prevent the release of natural esters into the environment.
