This type of protection is applicable to electrical equipment where electrical circuits cannot cause explosion in the explosive atmospheres surrounding them.

This standard is also applicable to electrical equipment or parts of electrical equipment located outside of an explosive atmosphere or protected by another Type of Protection listed in IEC 60079-0; Here, the intrinsic safety of electrical circuits in an explosive atmosphere applies to the design and construction of such electrical equipment or parts of such electrical equipment. Electrical circuits exposed to an explosive atmosphere are evaluated for use in such an atmosphere by applying this standard.

If the requirements in this standard are applicable to both intrinsically safe apparatus and related apparatus, the term "device" is used throughout the standard. This standard is for electrical equipment only; therefore, the term "equipment" used in the standard always means "electrical equipment".

If the apparatus concerned is placed in an explosive atmosphere, it will be protected with an appropriate Type of Protection listed in IEC 60079-0 and then apply to the requirements for this method of protection together with the relevant parts of IEC 60079-0.

A containment is required where intrinsic safety can be compromised by moisture or dust ingress or access to conductive parts, for example when circuits contain infallible leakage distances.

Where the intrinsically safe or associated apparatus is equipped with multiple plugs and sockets for external connections and change may adversely affect the type of protection, these plugs and sockets must be arranged so that replacement is not possible, for example, by switching, or matching plugs and sockets, for example marking to make exchange clear or by color coding.
