IEC EN 60745-2-22 Hand Held Motor Power Tools - Safety - Part 2-22: Testing for Special Requirements for Cutting Machines

These machines are designed to cut materials such as metal, concrete, masonry, glass and tile. This standard does not apply to grinders, sanders or polishers, even if they can be converted to cutting machines covered by IEC EN 60745-2-3, circular saws covered by IEC EN 60745-2-5.

Kickback is a sudden response to a jammed or stuck spinning wheel. Jamming or tripping causes the spinning wheel to come to a rapid stop, forcing the uncontrolled power tool in the opposite direction of the wheel's rotation at the attachment point.

For example, if an abrasive wheel is caught or pinched by the workpiece, the edge of the disc that enters the pinch point can get stuck in the surface of the material, causing the disc to pop or fly off. The wheel may jump towards or away from the operator, depending on the direction of movement of the wheel at the pinch point. Abrasive discs can also break under these conditions.

To prevent the installation of an oversized wheel, the gap between the inside of the housing and the circumference of a new abrasive product should be at least 130 mm and not more than 8 mm for tools with a rated capacity not exceeding 10 mm. Between the guide plate and the underside of the motor, a minimum clearance can be provided for the motor to plunge relative to the upper guard.

The spindle and flange shall be designed to fix and place the wheels on the cutting machine. At least one of the flanges shall be wedged, screwed, pulled or otherwise secured to prevent rotation with respect to the tool spindle.
