IEC EN 61558-2-16 Special Requirements and Tests for Transformers for Switched Mode Power Supply Units and Switched Power Supply Units

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 61558-2-16 testing. This part of IEC EN 61558 deals with the safety of switch-mode power supply units and transformers for switch-mode power supply units. Transformers containing electronic circuits are also covered by this standard.

IEC EN 61558-2-16 Special Requirements and Tests for Transformers for Switched Mode Power Supply Units and Switched Power Supply Units

This section covers security requirements for:

  • Reserve the SMPS for general use corresponding to Section 2-1;
  • Isolating the SMPS for general use, corresponding to Sections 2-4;
  • Security-isolated SMPS for general use corresponding to Sections 2-6;
  • Automatic SMPS for general use, corresponding to Sections 2-13.

For the SMPS for specific application corresponding to the other Part 61558 of the 2 series, the necessary requirements of the relevant Part 2 apply. In addition, the requirements listed in this section apply. Where two requirements conflict, the most serious takes precedence.

This standard also applies to switched-mode power supply units, converters and inverters without rated output limitation. However, such switched-mode power supply units are for special applications and are subject to an agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer.

The input and output circuits shall be electrically separated from each other and the construction shall be such that there is no possibility of connection between these circuits directly or indirectly via other conductive parts.

For SMPS with isolation transformers and safety isolation transformers, the input and output terminals for external wiring must be located so that the measured distance from the entry point of the conductors to these terminals is not less than 25 mm. If a barrier is used to obtain the distance, measurements should be made over and around the barrier, which will be of insulating material and permanently fixed to the transformer.
