IEC EN 61558-2-3 deals with the safety of ignition transformers for gas and oil burners. Ignition transformers containing electronic circuits are also within the scope of this standard.
This section does not apply to external circuits and their components intended to be connected to the input and output terminals or socket outlets of transformers. The transformers covered in this section are used in applications where double or reinforced insulation between circuits is not required by installation rules or the end product standard.
For combined transformers, the above graphic symbol may be either on the transformer or on equipment located close to the transformer. If there is no graphic symbol on the transformer, the manufacturer will indicate in the instruction sheets that this graphic symbol should be placed on equipment close to the transformer.
Output terminals of the transformer are short-circuited with a suitable ammeter. The transformer is connected to the rated supply voltage at the rated frequency and operated at the rated duty factor until steady state conditions are reached. The output current is then measured. The transformer is connected to the rated supply voltage at the rated frequency. During this test, the protective earth terminal must be connected to the protective earth.
