Specifies a ring topology-based recovery protocol designed to deterministically respond to a single failure of an inter-switch link or switch in the network. Each switch has an equal administrative role in the network.

DRP provides a framework describing the operational behavior of switches in a ring topology to detect a single network failure (such as an inter-switch link failure or a ring switch failure) and recover from it within a deterministic recovery time.

A DRP network has a ring topology with multiple key nodes, each of which can be a switch or a switching end node. Each node requires an integrated switch that has at least two ports (ring ports) connected to the ring and can detect and recover from faults in accordance with the DRP protocol.

Each node has an equal management role in a DRP ring network. This means that each node cyclically monitors and checks the ring topology and reacts to network failures by multicasting a ring test frame RingCheck and an inter-switch link test frame LinkCheck. The LinkCheck testing framework provides the mechanism to detect failure of a key node.
