IEC EN 62614-2 Fiber Optics - Multimode Launch Conditions - Part 2: Determining Launch Condition Requirements for Measuring Multimode Attenuation

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 62614-2 testing. The purpose of IEC EN 62614-2, a technical report, is to show the background of the enclosed flux for the characterization of multimodal launch conditions. This includes the selection of the enclosed flux and the definition of the enclosed flux requirements in conjunction with the implied variation for all multimode attenuation and return loss measurement methods on graded index multimode fiber products.

IEC EN 62614-2 Fiber Optics - Multimode Launch Conditions - Part 2: Determining Launch Condition Requirements for Measuring Multimode Attenuation

This edition includes the following important technical changes from the previous edition:

  • Significant reduction in item about uncertainties;
  • End-to-end technical revisions in addition to updates to key normative references;
  • Inclusion of additional figures regarding the wavelength bias between 850 nm and 1300 nm and the circumscribed flux limit of the 10 Gigabit Ethernet VCSEL.

There are a wide variety of launch conditions used to test multimode fiber components and systems. Light sources typically used to measure attenuation can produce varying modal distributions when sent into multimode fiber. These different modal distributions, combined with the differential mode attenuation (DMA) found in most multimode components, often cause measurement variations when measuring the attenuation of multimode components. For example, differences in attenuation measurement may occur when two similar light sources or different launch cables are used.

Legacy (LED-based) applications had a large power budget, which in many cases masked the difference in results between factory and field measurement. As technology has improved, system requirements for attenuation have become more stringent. Challenging application requirements increase the need for accurate and repeatable multi-mode attenuation measurements on a variety of field testers. Attenuation measurement experiments with different instruments with the same standards-compliant setup produce measurement variations caused by different launch conditions.
