IEC 61800-5-1 Adjustable Speed ​​Electric Power Drive Systems - Safety Requirements - Electrical, Thermal and Energy

This part of IEC 61800 specifies requirements for adjustable speed power drive systems or elements with respect to electrical, thermal and energy safety aspects. It does not cover equipment driven outside of interface requirements.

It applies to adjustable speed electric drive systems that include power conversion, drive control and motor or motors. Traction and electric vehicle drives are excluded. Applies to DC drive systems connected to line voltages up to 1 kV ac, 50 Hz or 60 Hz and ac drive systems with converter input voltages up to 35 kV, 50 Hz or 60 Hz and output voltages up to 35 kV.

The scope of this part of IEC 61800 does not cover devices used as component parts of a PDS if they comply with the safety requirements of a relevant product standard for the same environment. For example, motors used in PDS will comply with the relevant parts of IEC 60034.

The main areas of change in this edition are:

• Expanding the subclause on protective bonding;
• Clarifying the distinction between touch current and protective conductor current;
• Revision of the insulation section to include solid insulation;
• Revision of the solid insulation section;
• Adding high-frequency isolation requirements;
• Addition of climate and vibration tests;
• Clarification of the voltage test procedure to avoid overstressing the basic insulation.
