IEC EN 60034-18-1 Rotating Electrical Machines - Functional Evaluation of Insulation Systems - General Rules

IEC EN 60034-18 consists of several parts that deal with different types of functional evaluation and special types of testing procedures for insulation systems of rotating electrical machines. IEC EN 60034-18-1 provides general guidelines for such procedures and qualification principles; The next sections are IEC EN 60034-18-21, IEC EN 60034-18-31, IEC EN 60034-18-32, IEC EN 60034-18-33, IEC EN 60034-18-34, IEC EN 60034-18-41 and IEC EN 60034-18-42 provide detailed procedures for various types of windings. Beyond this, part IEC EN 60034-18-41 and IEC EN 60034-18-42 contain specific test procedures for the electrical evaluation of windings that are electrically stressed by the converter supply.

IEC EN 60505 forms the basis for estimating the aging of electrical insulation systems under conditions of electrical, thermal, mechanical, environmental stresses or their combinations (multifactor stresses). It specifies the general principles and procedures that must be followed when defining functional testing and evaluation procedures.

IEC EN 60085 deals with the thermal evaluation of electrical insulating materials and, in particular, insulation systems used in electrical equipment. In particular, the thermal classes of insulation systems have been defined and designations such as 60034 (B), 1 (F) and 130 (H) have been given for use in rotating machines of IEC 155-180.

In the past, materials for insulation systems were often selected solely on the basis of the thermal resistance of individual materials, which was performed according to the IEC 60216 series. However, IEC 60085 recognizes that such selection may only be used for screening materials prior to further functional evaluation of a new insulation system that is not service proven. The evaluation is carried out on the basis of comparison with a service-proven reference insulation system. Service experience is the preferred basis for evaluating the thermal durability of an insulation system.
