IEC EN 60076-2 Power Transformers - Part 2: Temperature Rise Test for Liquid Immersed Transformers

A transformer can be specified with alternative cooling methods. In this case, the specification and rating plate should carry information on the power ratings at which the transformer meets the temperature rise limits when these alternatives are valid.

For alternative cooling methods with the highest cooling capacity, the power rating is the rated power of the transformer. Alternative cooling methods are traditionally listed in order of increasing cooling capacity.

In the case of a transformer with more than one rated power (for example, when two or more cooling methods are provided), a temperature rise test should in principle be carried out for each rated power, but the number of tests can be reduced by agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser.

Precautions should be taken to minimize variations in cooling air temperature, especially in the last part of the test period when steady-state conditions are approaching. Rapid change of readings due to turbulence should be prevented by suitable means, such as heat sinks for temperature sensors of thermal time constant similar to the thermal time constant of the transformer.
