IEC EN 60255-5 Electrical Relays - Part 5: Insulation Coordination for Measuring Relays and Protection Equipment - Requirements and Tests

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60255-5 testing. This standard specifies general requirements for insulation coordination of measuring relays and protection equipment. Provides guidance for the selection of gaps and leakage distances and other considerations related to the isolation of measuring relays and protection equipment; Specifies requirements for voltage tests and insulation resistance measurement.

IEC EN 60255-5 Electrical Relays - Part 5: Insulation Coordination for Measuring Relays and Protection Equipment - Requirements and Tests

This standard specifically specifies the following:

  • Definition of rules;
  • Guidance on the selection of gaps and leakage distances and other considerations related to the insulation of measuring relays and protection equipment;
  • Requirements for voltage tests and insulation resistance measurement.

This standard also applies to shunts, series resistors, transformers, etc., used and tested in conjunction with measuring relays and protection equipment as specified above, except where devices are covered by other IEC publications, e.g. communication interfaces. This also applies to related assistive devices such as

The application of insulation coordination according to IEC EN 60664-1 results in a stepped range of rated impulse voltages depending on the rated voltage of the supply circuit and the applicable overvoltage category. In addition, the impact test voltages depend on the air pressure and therefore the height of the test site. As a result, a wide range of test voltages becomes necessary.

Impulse withstand testing of circuits containing voltage suppression components can result in severe distortion of the impact test waveform. This is acceptable provided the equipment is undamaged and in full working order upon completion of the tests. Surge testing of circuits is not part of insulation testing and is not part of this standard.
