IEC EN 60454-2 Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Tapes for Electrical Purposes - Part 2: Test Methods

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 60454-2 testing. Explains the methods of determining the mechanical and electrical resistance and adhesive properties of pressure sensitive adhesive tapes and the test methods to be used.

IEC EN 60454-2 Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Tapes for Electrical Purposes - Part 2: Test Methods

Deadweight thickness gauge with two ground and concentric circular surfaces, flat within 0,001mm and parallel within 0,003mm. The upper surface will be 6 mm to 8 mm in diameter and the lower surface will be larger than the upper surface. The upper surface will move on the axis perpendicular to the two faces.

The gauge should be rated to read directly to 0,002mm. The bezel of the thickness gauge must be strong enough that a load of 15 N applied to the gauge housing without contacting the weight or the pressure foot shaft (indicated on the thickness gauge) produces a deflection of the frame not greater than 0,002 mm. The pressure applied on the sample should be (50 ± 5) kPa.

The width is the vertical distance, expressed in millimeters, between the opposite cut edges of the test specimen of the adhesive tape. If the turns do not coincide exactly, this method may not be suitable for slit or rewound rolls.

The length can be calculated from a measurement of the number of turns of the belt on the reel and a measurement of the outer circumference of the belt and the outer circumference of the core. Alternatively, the length can be measured directly using a length sensor with a rotating wheel that rotates on the tape roll as it unfolds.

Requirements for individual products are given in IEC EN 60454-3. Test methods will be selected from those given in this section. When electrolytic corrosion is significant, ie fine wire with a diameter of about 1 mm or less is used, the determination is made in accordance with IEC EN 60426.

Make sure that the sample roll and material from it are not contaminated by the atmosphere, particularly the atmosphere of a chemistry laboratory or by bare-hand contact, and that the tools used to cut or manipulate the test piece are chemically clean.
