Although radiated noise from household appliances generally does not pose a hazard to the hearing of the operator and other exposed persons, the need for standardization procedures for determining radiated noise has long been recognized. Such procedures should be applicable not only to specific device types, but also to most devices in general use.
In general, determining noise levels is only part of a comprehensive testing procedure that covers many aspects of device features and performance. Therefore, it is important to keep the requirements for noise measurements (such as test environment, instrumentation and the amount of labor involved) at a modest level.
The results of the noise measurements will be used for many purposes, eg for noise reporting as well as comparing the noise emitted by a particular device with the noise emitted by other devices of the same family. In other cases, the results will be taken as a basis for engineering actions in the development stages of new pieces of equipment or in deciding on means for soundproofing. For all purposes, it is important to specify procedures with known precision so that the results of measurements taken by different laboratories can be compared.
Adoption of these methods allows the use of semi-anechoic chambers, dedicated reverberation test chambers and hard-walled test chambers. The result of the measurements is the sound power level of the device. Within the measurement uncertainty inherent to these methods, the results obtained from the determination under free field conditions on a projection plane are equal to those obtained in reverberant fields.
It should be stressed that this test code relates to airborne noise only. In some cases, for example, structure-borne noise transmitted to the adjacent room can be significant.
