The publications of the IEC EN 62150 series contain basic information on environmental test procedures and measurement procedures related to fiber optic active components and devices (hereinafter "active components"). They are intended to achieve uniformity and repeatability in environmental testing and measurement procedures.
The terms "environmental conditioning" and "environmental testing" refer to environments to which active ingredients may be exposed so that an assessment of their performance can be made under conditions of use, transport and storage.
The term "performance testing" refers to measurements necessary to evaluate the physical and optical properties of an active ingredient and which can be used before, during or after a test procedure to measure the effects of environmental conditioning or testing.
Requirements for the performance of active ingredients subjected to the test and measurement procedures described in this standard are not included. The detail specification of the tested active ingredient defines the permissible performance limits.
When drafting a performance specification or purchase contract, only the tests required for the relevant active ingredients should be specified, taking into account technical and economic aspects.
Performance standards are in the IEC EN 62149 series and measurement procedures are in the IEC EN 62150 series. Each test or measurement procedure is published as a standalone publication so that it can be modified, expanded or canceled without impact on any other test or measurement procedure. However, it should be noted that where practical, reference is made to other standards rather than repeating all or part of existing standards.
