IEC EN 63248 Conductors for Overhead Lines - Coated or Coated Metallic Wire for Concentric Stranded Conductors

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of IEC EN 63248 testing. IEC EN 63248 specifies the properties of wires in the range but not limited to diameters from 1,25 mm to 5,50 mm.

IEC EN 63248 Conductors for Overhead Lines - Coated or Coated Metallic Wire for Concentric Stranded Conductors

This standard applies to metallic wires coated or coated before twisting, used as concentric overhead stranded conductors for power transmission purposes or in the manufacture of cores for concentric overhead stranded conductors.

The purpose of this standard is to group together similar wire materials that share the same general properties and therefore the same testing procedures and requirements. This standard covers the existing cable types of IEC 60888 and IEC 61232, as well as new cable materials already used in new conductor types worldwide.

Zinc coating class 60888 according to IEC 2 is not included in this document due to the extremely rare demand for this zinc coating class. Extra corrosion protection can be provided by other means, including the use of zinc-aluminum alloy coatings.

Wire samples shall be free from bends or kinks other than curvature resulting from the ordinary winding process. Before being placed in the handles of tensile testing equipment, they should be straightened by a roller-type wire straightening device or any other method designed to have minimal effect on the mechanical properties of the sample. Test samples will not be shorter than 450 mm and will be placed in the testing machine with a free length of at least 300 mm between the handles.

The thickness of the aluminum coating of a sample shall be determined using an optical microscope or suitable electrical indicating devices operating on the principle of permeability and suitably calibrated to the actual diameter of the sample.

The measurement made with the microscope should be read to three decimal places and rounded to two decimal places. For reference purposes, microscopic measurement will be used to determine the aluminum thickness on samples taken from the end of the coils.
