This section specifies all safety requirements and tests related to control equipment (e.g. programmable logic controllers), distributed control system components, I/O devices and human interface, machine (HMI).
This standard does not deal with aspects of the overall automated system, eg. a complete assembly line. Control equipment (e.g. DCS and PLC), their application program and their associated peripherals are considered components of an overall automated system (in this context, components are items that perform no useful function on their own).
As control equipment (eg DCS and PLC) are component devices, safety considerations for the overall automated system, including installation and implementation, are beyond the scope of this standard.
This standard specifies a safety-capable enclosure or a combination of enclosures, safety-capable, and all-around installation provisions, with the possible exception of the mounting surface, that includes a safety-enclosed enclosure to prevent personnel from accidentally touching dangerous live, hot, or moving parts. and meets the requirements of mechanical strength, flammability and stability.
