In most cases, safety is ensured by a set of systems based on many technologies (e.g. mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, electronic, programmable electronics). Therefore, any security strategy must consider not only all elements within a single system (e.g. sensors, controllers and actuators), but also all security-related systems that make up the total combination of safety-related systems. Therefore, this International Standard can provide a framework within which security-related systems based on other technologies can be considered when dealing with E/E/PE security-related systems.
It is recognized that there is a wide variety of applications using E/E/PE security-related systems in various application sectors and covering a wide range of complexity, hazard and risk potentials. The security measures required in any particular application will depend on many application-specific factors. As this International Standard is generic, it will ensure that such measures are formulated in future product and application industry international standards and revisions of currently existing ones.
