IEC EN 61643-21 Test for Surge Protection Device Connected to Telecommunications and Signaling Networks

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of IEC EN 61643-21 testing. This international standard applies to devices for surge protection of telecommunications and signaling networks against the indirect and direct effects of lightning or other transient overvoltages.

IEC EN 61643-21 Test for Surge Protection Device Connected to Telecommunications and Signaling Networks

The purpose of these tests is to evaluate the performance of surge arresters in protecting networks from overvoltage events such as lightning strikes and switching surges.

Below are some of the key tests performed on SPDs connected to telecommunication and signaling networks:

  • Rated discharge current test: This test determines the SPD's ability to handle a surge current of a given magnitude and duration without failure. The SPD is subjected to multiple surge currents of increasing magnitude until it reaches the nominal discharge current value specified by the manufacturer.
  • Voltage protection level test: This test measures the voltage level at which the SPD begins to transmit and direct surge energy from the shielded equipment. The SPD is exposed to inrush currents of varying magnitudes and waveforms and the voltage level at which it begins to transmit is recorded.
  • Response time test: This test measures the time it takes for the SPD to begin transmitting surge energy and redirecting it away from the protected equipment. The SPD is subjected to a surge current of a certain magnitude and waveform, and the time it takes to reach the voltage protection level is recorded.
  • Endurance test: This test evaluates the long-term performance of the SPD under normal operating conditions. The SPD is subjected to a continuous AC or DC voltage for a specified period of time and its performance is monitored for any deterioration or failure.
  • Environmental testing: This test evaluates the performance of the SPD under various environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and vibration. The SPD is subjected to these conditions over a period of time and its performance is monitored for any deterioration or failure.

By performing these tests on SPDs connected to telecommunication and signaling networks, manufacturers and users can ensure that devices are reliable and effective in protecting against surge events and comply with relevant regulatory standards.
