IEC EN 62641 specifies the mechanical and electrical properties of round and shaped wires for equivalent diameters up to values based on aluminum and aluminum alloys, thermal resistance alloys.
This standard applies to aluminum and aluminum alloy wires used in the manufacture of concentric overhead electrical stranded conductors with or without gaps for power transmission purposes.
The purpose of this standard is threefold:
The first is to group together similar wire materials that share the same general properties and therefore the same testing procedures and requirements. These wires are current aluminum and aluminum alloy wires conforming to IEC 60104, IEC 60121, IEC 60889 and IEC 62004 as well as EN 50183.
Secondly, this format allows for easier standard maintenance as multiple cable materials are covered in a single document rather than separate documents.
Third, this standard shows the most used wire materials worldwide, based on the cooperation agreement between the IEC and CENELEC, the IEC survey in 2017 and the CENELEC survey. Standardized materials provide a good foundation that can be expanded by other materials used in regions and countries.
