ISO 26262 is intended to apply to safety-related systems fitted to mass-production passenger cars up to a maximum gross vehicle mass of 3500 kg, incorporating one or more electrical or electronic (E/E) systems. ISO 26262 does not address unique E/E systems in special purpose vehicles such as vehicles designed for disabled drivers.
ISO 26262 addresses potential hazards arising from the malfunctioning behavior of E/E security-related systems, including the interaction of these systems. It does not address hazards related to electric shock, fire, smoke, heat, radiation, toxicity, flammability, reactivity, corrosion, energy release, and similar hazards, unless directly caused by malfunctioning behavior of E/E safety-related systems.
ISO 26262 does not address the rated performance of E/E systems, even if specific functional performance standards exist for these systems (eg active and passive safety systems, braking systems, Adaptive Cruise Control).
ISO 26262-10 provides an overview of ISO 26262 as well as annotations and aims to improve understanding of other parts of ISO 26262. Explains the general concepts of ISO 26262 to facilitate understanding. The explanation expands from general concepts to specific contexts.
In case of inconsistency between ISO 26262-10 and another part of ISO 26262, the requirements, recommendations and information specified in the other part of ISO 26262 apply.
